Art & Letters

Publishers Essential Works have teamed up with East London's Idea Generation gallery to offer an intimate look at the life and loves of Syd Barrett; the pioneering songwriter and musical visionary behind Pink Floyd. Never before seen paintings, illustrations, photographs and intimate love letters will be on display until the 10th April 2011, to coincide with the release of new book Barrett: The definitive visual companion.

Barrett attended London's Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before forming psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, and returned to art and painting in particular after leaving the band in 1968. This exhibition explores Syd's many creative outlets and gives a whole new perspective on one of the most enigmatic figures in musical history.

Cycling & Vintage

Last Thursday saw the launch of the Fred Perry Cycling & Vintage blank canvas collaboration, inspired by the unique relationship between cycling and subculture. Back in the 1960s the merino cycling jersey was adopted by the Mod movement who were attracted to the slim cut, unique styling and durability of the garment. Perfect for layering under a tailored suit, these jerseys adapted to their surroundings: breathable enough to dance all night in and warm enough to stand up to a crisp walk home in the morning.

Three styles from Fred Perry Cycling Collection 2011 - Available in our Laurel Wreath Collection Shops and FredPerry.com

We've created four limited edition Fred Perry cycling shirts which will be sold in Laurel Wreath Collection shops and at FredPerry.com just as the weather becomes perfect for riding. Finished with bold colour blocked panels and graphic designs, these shirts feature zip necks and pockets on the base of the back ideal for holding a water bottle or bike light. To showcase our inspiration for this blank canvas collaboration we've sourced a small number of original 60s cycle jerseys, each one of a kind and available only in our Laurel Wreath Collection shops. These handpicked shirts give a fascinating insight into the unique designs and styling of the 60s shirts and also offer the unique opportunity to own a rare piece of cycling history.

Fred Perry X Raleigh Bike

This blank canvas project is not our first foray into the world of cycling - last year, Fred Perry teamed up with iconic British bike makers Raleigh to create a limited edition Fred Perry x Raleigh road bike, created in classic racing green with a traditional tan Brooks saddle.

The Fred Perry Cycling & Vintage collection launches in Laurel Wreath Collection shops from Thursday 24th March, with the Fred Perry cycle shirts also available at FredPerry.com.

The Godfather of Ska Opens his Wardrobe...

Earning the accolade of ‘The Godfather of Ska’, Laurel Aitken has been recognised as one of the most exciting artists of the past hundred years, being at the forefront of the Raggae, Ska, 2-Tone and Skinhead movements. Famous for tracks such as Skinhead Invasion and Scandal in Brixton Market, Laurel moved to Leicester in 1970 and worked hard to inspire and motivate young musicians.

Paying homage to the artist this month is Ska with Laurel an exhibition curated by the New Walk museum in Leicester showcasing the life and work of Laurel Aitken.

Ska With Laurel

A large focus of the exhibition is Laurel’s stage costumes – from sequined blazers to classic pork pie hats, the artist’s clothing was always as fresh as his music. Laurel and the pioneers of the Ska movement spurred a new fashion scene as many were inspired by their sharp and subversive style – a look which is still championed today.

Ska with Laurel is taking place until the 8th of May 2011 at the New Walk Museum, Leicester. http://www.leicester.gov.uk/skawithlaurel/
