This Friday sees Fred Perry Subculture host the fourth instalment of Sub-sonic Live, a unique live music concept that has previously held sold out performances by Factory Floor, The Horrors and Andrew Weatherall. For the fourth event, we’re particularly excited to see electro-funk and former Hacienda resident Greg Wilson bring his ‘Reels of Steel’ show to The Garage, Islington. Reels of Steel has earned a cult following and features a combination of bespoke visuals and Wilson’s eclectic musical selection. Equally exciting is the inclusion of a rare UK performance by Afrika Bambaataa: celebrated as The Godfather of hip-hop and a key player in the fledgling electro-funk movement.
30 years on from its original release, Greg speaks of the profound influence Afrika Bambaataa’s track ‘Planet Rock’ has had on his career:
"This was a true hybrid, its impact, influence and inspiration an absolute gamechanger. On a personal level (the event is) a big one, for I finally get to meet the man who had such a bearing on my own DJ destiny, spinning Electro-Funk in the North of England back in '82, and taking a lot of stick from the black music purists for daring to play something so radically different as "Planet Rock"
"In a sense, the event represents both the past and the future for me, which is always the equation I’m looking to balance. From old school roots to new horizons, it all connects."
Disco Bloodbath, Psychemagick and Dollop DJ's will also feature in what's set to be one of the most exciting Sub-Sonic events yet.
