The Bicycle Film Festival

London's Barbican Centre will host the 9th annual Bicycle Film Festival this weekend, with a series of screenings and events taking place in the city. With British cycling riding high after a summer of successes, the festival is perfectly timed for a gathering of new and established cycling fans.

The festival programme features both feature length and short films, with highlights including the World Premiere of Line of Sight, directed by Benny Zenga and shot by legendary cycling cinematographer Lucas Brunelle.  British actor Timothy Spall stars in Justin Chadwick’s Boy, a short silent film that explores love and loss as a father struggles with the death of his son, who is killed whilst cycling on a country road.

Running alongside the festival will be a diverse selection of special events, including the annual Bike Polo Tournament and a BMX jam hosted by Albion BMX magazine. The festival, which originated in New York, is now a global event that will travel to over 25 cities this year, from London to Tokyo, Moscow to Mexico City. From its beginnings in 2001, the festival’s aim has been to celebrate the on-going relationship between creative and bicycle communities, uniting road cycling, mountain biking, fixed gear, BMX and cyclocross in a shared passion.

Viva Ska Vegas!

Having seen Madness whip the Coachella crowd into a frenzy over the past two weekends, we thought we'd take a look at some of the other opportunities to see some of the best ska bands perform in the States. Step forward Viva Ska Vegas, an all-day event taking place on Saturday 28th April at the Henderson Events Plaza, Nevada. The line-up features headline spots from the legendary Skatalites, The Aquabats and the Voodoo Glow Skulls, alongside a selection of other new and established acts.

The event has been organised by SMASH magazine, a free local music publication available in the Las Vegas and San Diego area. Tickets for the event are just $22, which includes entry to the afterparty at the nearby Goldmine Tavern. Looks like one not to be missed if you're lucky enough to be in the area.

Strummer of Love Line-Up Announced

Earlier this year we mentioned Strummerville, a Foundation set up by the family and friends of Clash frontman Joe Strummer after he sadly passed away in 2002. Since its launch, Strummerville has helped up and coming musicians up and down the country gain access to musical and recording equipment to nurture and develop new talent that may have gone unnoticed without a little extra help. This year, the Foundation will commemorate the ten year anniversary since Joe's death with a 'Strummer of Love' 3 day music festival in Somerset.

The initial line-up has been released, and features a great mix of new and established talent. The Pogues and Badly Drawn Boy have been confirmed as headliners, with performers ranging from Billy Bragg to David Rodigan in close support. Fred Perry collaborator Don Letts will feature at the event, as will Subculture favourites Dog is Dead. Ticket sales from the event will benefit the Strummerville Foundation.
